High above the huge golden Buddha in Dambulla lie the cave temples. An amazing array of full sized and oversized Buddha's carved into the rock and painted in traditional colours. Frescos abound. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples date back to 1st Century BC and they contain 153 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of gods and goddesses. There are over 2100 square metres of murals.
